Recognize a need to remodel

Maybe you just bought a home that needs some work, or perhaps you just added a new member of the family.  Whatever the reason, you’ve identified a need to remodel your home and now the fun begins.

Establish a budget

This should be done very early in the remodeling process.  It’s very difficult to design the right remodel if you don’t have an idea of what you want to spend on it.  Since there are so many variables, such as the materials and products you want to use or the condition of the space you want to remodel, you should have a feel for the upper and lower limits to what you are comfortable spending.  Keep in mind that there are remodels that can be done for many different price ranges, so don’t think you have to break the bank to get what you want, but make sure you understand that a good remodel is timeless and you should only have to do it once.

Gather ideas

This is when the real fun begins.  Start looking around at your the homes of your friends and family to see what you like and don’t like.  Ask them what they would do differently if they could.  Gather images from online, magazines and books of what design aspects pique your interests.  This step can sometimes take years, so get a start on it, even if you don’t intend to remodel anytime soon.  Everyone should have an idea of what their dream home would be like!

Make a list of needs and wants

The next step is to boil down your dreams into what you could really, functionally apply to your home.  Not all ideas work for all spaces, but variations on your dreams are always possible.  A list of needs and wants will help you and us differentiate between what matters most and what would be fun to have.

Have a meeting with us to go over your ideas and get some of ours

Now that you’ve done some homework, give us a call and have us out to look at your space.  Our consultations are always free and we love to bounce ideas around and talk about what can be done, sometimes things you may have never thought of or thought possible.  At this initial meeting, we’ll get measurements and an idea of what your home’s structural, electrical, plumbing and other systems have to add to the equation.  Now we’ll take this information back to our office and let the creative juices flow.  If you have established your budget, this is a great time to let us know what that is so that we can design the project around your wants and needs as well as your budget.

We come up with one or more design concepts with a general price range

Next, we will take all the information we’ve gathered and come up with some design ideas.  Usually this means we develop a few concepts to show you, but one or two will really stand out.  Based on the designs that are the most obvious, we will then create for you a general price range of what we think it will cost overall. This price range is not exact and will not include specific pricing from our trade partners, but is based on our experience with similar projects we’ve done in the past.  The variables usually include exact subcontractor pricing as well as specific product selections that still need to be made.  Though you can always go over or under the range, we are comfortable that your project can be completed within the initial range we give you.  Our range is designed to get us on the same page and if you have not yet established a budget, this will help you get to that point.

You evaluate the concepts to see what you like and don’t like

Once we’ve come up with some designs and pricing, we’ll meet with you again to go over it all.  This is the time when we discuss what you may like or dislike about the designs and tweak them to your exact wishes.  We will also present you with the price range and discuss budget in more detail. Depending on how many revisions you desire and the scope of your project, we may ask for a design retainer at this point of the process.

We give you a firm proposal based on your selected design

Once the design is finalized, we can finalize pricing.  This may include having a few of our trade partners out to look things over so as to know exactly what they will be doing.  Our final pricing and designs will be included as a part of the contract.

We draft a contract and schedule and get a down payment

At our contract meeting, we will go through a detailed scope of work for your project and discuss timing, start and finish dates as well as progress payments and warranty. Also at this meeting, we will look for a down payment in order to get you firmly on the schedule and start ordering materials.

Site preparation

The first thing we will do in your home is site prep.  We fully understand the anxiety of remodeling and the trust you must put in us as your contractors.  We always try to minimize the impact of the remodel on your everyday lives, so we’ll isolate the work area from the rest of the home as best we can and put down drop cloths and floor protection whenever possible. We do all this before we even pick up a hammer.

Building process and progress payments

Now the work begins. We will do everything in our power to conform to the schedule we establish with you.  As with most remodels, there may be complications that come up along the way.  We don’t know what we have in store for us behind your walls, but we will always look out for your best interests in your remodel and do what we can to quickly resolve any hiccups that may occur along the way.  Our progress payment system is designed to make sure you have the peace of mind that the work will be completed and also allow us to pay our suppliers and subcontractors as soon as their work is completed.

Final walk through with homeowners

Once the project is completed, we want you to be completely satisfied.  If you notice anything you’re not happy with or something that was missed, we want to know about it so that we can fix it immediately.  As we say in our mission statement, we intend to exceed our clients’ expectations, permanently, from start to finish.

Our continued commitment

Our commitment to you and your project doesn’t end when the project is completed.  If you ever have an issue with your remodel, we want to know about it.  We do not have an advertising budget, but rather count on repeat business and referrals.  That means we want you to be able to tell your friends and family about how much you love your remodel and let them know who did it for you.
